On Thursday, the Vampire Diaries returned with their second season. The first episode takes place seconds after the finale of season 1. Last season, Katherine had returned and killed Uncle John (or so we thought), Jeremy took his vamp girlfriend Anna’s blood and tried to OD on pills so he would become a vampire, and Damon shared a kiss with Katherine (who he thought was Elena). Elena walks into the house to find Uncle John on the ground bleeding. She calls 911 and an ambulance arrives for him. Once Elena realized Katherine has been invited in, she fears for Jeremy’s life and goes upstairs to find him asleep. She wakes him up. She calls Stefan and tells him about the blood and pills. Stefan diagnoses that he didn’t take enough to kill him and the blood cured him of what he did take. So no, sorry Jer, but you failed to become a vampire. Katherine comes to the house while Stefan is there (Elena and Damon are not there). Stefan is not fooled by Katherine and tries to find out why she is here. She tells Stefan that “at least one of you wasn’t fooled”. She escapes when Stefan gets distracted by the door. When Stefan later asks Damon what it means, Damon told him “to avoid any frown lines on his overcrowded face” that he kissed her. When Damon confronts Elena about it, she tells him she was surprised he thought she’d kiss him back. Damon’s most vulnerable moment comes from Katherine. He wants to kill her but ends up kissing her instead. He asks for a “brief pause, then we can go back to fireworks and rockets’ red glare”. He wants to know if she ever loved him. He says if she answers correctly he will forget the last 145 years of missing her. Katherine already knew the questions and knows the answer. Her answer shatters him. She was always in love with Stefan and she came back for him (though she doesn’t tell Damon this). Damon’s final blow to his good side was from Elena who told Damon she cared for him, but it would always be about Stefan. He tried to get her to admit she liked him by kissing her. It didn’t work. Her brother came to the doorway wondering what was going on. Damon told Elena her brother wanted to become a vampire. Damon went and snapped Jeremy’s neck effectively killing him. Jeremy didn’t die though because he had the ring from Uncle John that protected him from dying. Elena hated him now.
